The Ignite Awards

by Ines Marques De Sa

With spring having recently sprung, it seems an appropriate time to put a spring in the next step of your start-up. We are thrilled to be re-launching The Ignite Awards for 2017, with branded media company, Time Inc. (UK), and business events agency, London Business Forum.

Some of you might be wondering what The Ignite Awards actually is… well, wonder no more. The Ignite Awards is a national competition, looking to discover new creative businesses in the food & beverage, retail, and lifestyle sectors.

Do you think your start-up will fit the bill? It only takes a few short steps to apply

1.Pop on over to toucan.co/igniteawards and fill out the short application form.

2. Answer a few simple questions, including a description of your target market, revenue model, and competitive analysis.

3. Film a one-minute pitch about your business and upload it to YouTube as un-listed. This doesn’t need to be a work of art, simply keep it concise, coherent, and let your passion and enthusiasm shine through. For any further guidance about your video upload, here’s an article with some handy tips.

4. Submit your application before the deadline on 22 May

In the words of Aleksandr the Meerkat, “simples”.

An expert judging panel, including Rasha Khawaja, Founder and CEO of Toucan, Fiona Dent, Group Manager Director of Lifestyle at Time Inc. UK, and Brendan Barns, Founder of London Business Forum, will finalise a shortlist of applicants. The shortlist will present at The Ignite Awards ceremony, in the summer of 2017. The winner will gain access to Toucan’s support ecosystem and a six-month support programme from Time Inc. UK.

The winner and runner-up of The Ignite Awards 2016 were Gooseberry Planet and Apply.Property, renamed Property Technology. Gooseberry Planet, last year’s winner, is a software platform that uses gamification to teach children about Internet safety. As cyber bullying increases as a social issue, Gooseberry Planet aims to make children smarter decision makers when confronted with potential risks online. Property Technology, last year’s runner-up, is a tenant application tool for letting agents. It streamlines the rental process by building a prospect database, recording client’s property preferences, making new properties effectively marketed to the database. Both Stella James, Founder of Gooseberry Planet, and Sam Zawadski, Founder of Property Technology have prospered, since their success at The Ignite Awards. Sam developed a strong mentor relationship with Fiona Dent… they even cart-wheeled on stage together at Toucan’s flagship event, The Nest, in January 2017.

We look forward to receiving an application from your creative start-up!
